Sync across devices
Cloud Sync is off by default. Turn it on and Mimir keeps all your devices in step with one another.
Mimir encrypts your notes on your device before sending anything. Mimir’s own servers pass that encrypted data between your devices without being able to read it.
Cloud Sync is Mimir’s one paid feature: a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
Turning on Cloud Sync
You need the license key you got when you bought Cloud Sync. It starts
with MIMIR-. After you pay, the license key shows on the confirmation
page, and it also arrives by email.
- Copy your license key.
- Open search: click the spark button in the bottom-left corner, or press Cmd/Ctrl-P. On iPhone and iPad, pull down past the top of the feed.
- Click the sync icon, at the right end of the row along the bottom of search.
- Click Paste in the license key field. Cloud Sync turns on at once.
- Read the note about your eight words.
- Choose Understood.
- Save the eight words Mimir shows you somewhere safe, such as your password manager.
You can also type the license key and choose Unlock Cloud Sync.
If Mimir doesn’t accept your license key, choose Contact support under the message. Your email app opens a message to support. Paste your license key into it before you send it.
On a Mac, Get a license in the same window takes you to the page where you can buy Cloud Sync.
Those eight words are your account. There’s no email address and no password. The phrase is what proves a device is yours, and it’s what you enter on a second device to add it.
Anyone who has the eight words has full access to your notes. Anyone who doesn’t can’t get in, not even Mimir.
Your member badge
Once Cloud Sync is on, the sync window shows a badge above your eight words. The back is engraved with your member number and the month you joined. Drag the badge to spin it.
Below the badge is a link to its public page. Anyone with the link can see the badge. The page shows only the number and the month, nothing else about you, and it stays online as long as your Cloud Sync does.
Adding another device
- Install Mimir on the new device.
- Open search.
- Click the sync icon at the right end of the row along the bottom.
- Choose Have your eight words instead?
- Enter the same eight words you saved when you turned on Cloud Sync.
- Choose Join.
The new device downloads your notes and stays in step with every other device from then on.
Scanning the QR code on iPhone and iPad
You can scan your eight words instead of typing them.
- On a device that already syncs, open Cloud Sync and choose Show QR code.
- On the new iPhone or iPad, follow steps 1 to 4 above.
- Tap Scan QR code.
- Point the camera at the code.
- On the first device, choose Close to go back to Cloud Sync.
Anyone who scans the code can read your notes, the same as anyone who has your eight words. Show it only to your own devices.
The first time, iOS asks whether Mimir can use the camera. Mimir uses the camera only for this scan. If you said no, tap Open Settings in the message to allow it, or type the eight words instead.
Editing the same note on two devices
If you edit the same note on two devices while both are offline, Mimir keeps both versions. Once they reconnect, the other device’s version appears as a new bullet directly above yours.
Nothing is ever silently overwritten, and Mimir never asks you to pick one version over the other.
