Selecting, moving & deleting

Selecting a note always selects everything nested under it. There’s no way to select a note without its children.

Selecting multiple notes

To select every note between two notes, click the first one’s bullet and drag to the other. Shift-click extends a selection from the note you already have selected.

While you edit a note, press Cmd/Ctrl-A to select the note itself. Press it again to select every note on the page.

Selecting all of a note’s text is the same as selecting the note, however you do it: dragging across it, triple-clicking it, or Shift and the arrow keys. Start typing and your text replaces the note’s.

Press Escape to collapse a selection back to a single caret.

Selecting with the keyboard

When nothing is selected or being edited, press the up or down arrow key to highlight a note without opening it. Keep pressing to move the highlight.

  • Shift-Up or Shift-Down turns the highlight into a selection, extending it a note at a time.
  • Enter opens the highlighted note for editing instead, caret at the end.
  • Backspace or Delete deletes the highlighted note.
  • Left and Right fold and unfold the highlighted note.

Selecting a note that’s folded shut selects its hidden children too. A fold only hides notes from view. It doesn’t take them out of a selection.

With a selection, Cmd-Up folds every selected note that has children, and Cmd-Down unfolds them. The selection ends so you see the result.

Selecting on a touchscreen

Drag two fingers down over the notes to select them. A bar appears at the bottom with Copy, Publish, and Cancel. Cancel dismisses the selection.

Drag any selected note sideways to indent or outdent the whole selection at once, the same as Tab and Shift-Tab do. The selection moves one level per drag, and it stays selected after it lands.

Drag further to the left, past the last indent the selection can take, and every selected note turns red. Release there to delete them all. One Cmd/Ctrl-Z brings the whole selection back. To cut, copy the notes and then delete them this way.

Publish needs Cloud Sync to be on. Hold the button until its ring fills. After you publish, the button stays greyed out for 30 seconds while its ring drains.

Moving a note

You can move a note up or down among the notes at the same level. The notes nested under it move with it. To put a note under a different parent, move it into place, then press Tab or Shift-Tab.

On a Mac, hold Cmd and drag the note up or down. You can grab it anywhere on its line. The pointer turns into a hand when you hold Cmd over a note and move the pointer. The other notes slide apart to show where it lands. Once the drag starts, you can let go of Cmd. To put the note back where it was, press Escape before you let go of it. On a Force Touch trackpad, you feel a tick each time the landing spot changes.

On a touchscreen, put three fingers on the note and drag. The note lifts and follows your fingers, and you feel a tick each time the landing spot changes. It lands where you lift your fingers. A fourth finger cancels the move.

Hold the note near the top or bottom edge of the window and the page scrolls, faster the closer you get. It still only moves among the notes at its own level.

With the keyboard, press Cmd/Ctrl-Shift-Up or Cmd/Ctrl-Shift-Down to move the note you’re editing, or the highlighted note, one place at a time.

Deleting a note

A note with no children deletes when you press Backspace at the start of its empty line.

A note with children loses its own text on the first Backspace. A second Backspace does nothing until you outdent its children.

A selection of several notes deletes all of them, children included, when you press Backspace.

On a touchscreen, drag a note left past where it would outdent, and keep going. It turns red along with everything nested under it. It turns red at the same distance for every note, however deeply it’s indented. Release to delete, or drag back right to cancel. The same drag on a selection deletes every selected note.

Every delete is one undo step.

Undoing and redoing

Press Cmd/Ctrl-Z to undo, Cmd/Ctrl-Shift-Z to redo. Every change you make, such as typing, deleting, indenting, or moving a note, is one undo step.

On a touchscreen, use the keyboard toolbar’s Undo button, or tap with two fingers anywhere on the screen. A two-finger tap works even with no keyboard on screen, such as right after you drag a note away to delete it.

Undo and redo put you back where you were: in the note itself if you were typing when you pressed the key, or in browse mode if you weren’t.
